As the scoreline suggests this Aisling McGing Memorial Championship game, played in dull conditions in Ellistown on Sunday was a tight tense affair dominated by defences and an erratic referee brought all the way from North Roscommon to officiate the clash of the Leinster next door neighbours.
Now the losing of the game was not down to the referee but in the last minute of play when Joanna Timmins drove in yet another long range free, Dublin fouling judiciously outside scoring range, Paula Keatley was taken out as the ball arrived. When the ball broke Julie Cunningham did ignore the clamour for a free and won the ball on the deck but was quickly grounded and had to releaser the ball. As soon as a Dublin defender got hands on the ball the whistle was loudly blown and a free out awarded. The absence of 8 injured players, Caroline Hill, Trish Delahunt, Hilary Piggott, Aodhin McBride, Aileen Duffy, Aoife Trant, Emma McCartney & Lesley Tutty did not help the Kildare cause especially when some fresh legs might just have broken open Dublin’s tight defence in the latter stages.
The game started slowly with Kildare pinning Dublin back but only had 2 wides to show for their efforts before a Dublin break-out saw Teresa Mollohan kick the opening point after 6 minutes. Kildare replied immediately. Deirdre Gately was through, was brought down by the Dublin goalkeeper and Deirdre potted the free. The kick out was returned straight back and an Emma Coffey pass put Orla O’Shea in with a gaol on but she was dragged to the ground. The foul, again seemed to have been well inside the square, but the penalty claims were again turned down but Deirdre pointed the free to put Kildare in front. Kildare were unable to push on despite being favoured by the breeze and after 7 scoreless minutes Dublin won a free which Teresa Mollohan pointed. Kildare then lost Karen O’Shea with a hand injury with Niamh Quinn introduced to midfield and Kiri Lowry reverting to wing back. Dublin then had a major slice of luck. A long high ball seemed to be well covered by the Kildare defence but it broke to corner forward Sinead Deegan who left Therese Martin helpless with a drive high into the net. Buoyed up by the goal Dublin added a great point when Teresa Mollohan, bottled up in the right corner, swung around and lofted over off her left foot. Cliona Dowling was then introduced into the Kildare attack was herself and Deirdre Gately worked an opening but the final pass went to ground and the Dublin goalkeeper was out 10 yards to dive over the ball. With the Kildare forwards waiting the slightest chance to pull the goalkeeper just lay on the ball and Deirdre Gately had to settle for pointed the free. Just on half time a marvellous move saw Deirdre Gately and Cliona Dowling again involved creating a chance for Julie Cunningham which she kicked smartly over the bar.
At the break Deirdre Harris was introduced at corner back with Siobhan Tierney and Paula Keatley both moving forward a step and Kildare totally dominated but lacking sharpness had to settle for points after 36 and 48 minutes, the first a fine Julie Cunningham effort and the second from even further out by Deirdre Gately who had dropped deep with Cliona Dowling slotting into the full forward role. With the teams now level Dublin broke from defence and won a free which Teresa Mollohan pointed for Dublin’s only second half score and the last 10 minutes was all Kildare but scoring opportunities were scarce. Deirdre Gately did find herself with a goal chance but her effort from a narrow angle was saved at the expense of a “45”. The pressure built even more in the last minutes but 5 wides, all from scoreable positions, in the last 4 minutes condemned Kildare to a second narrow defeat in the completion.
The Kildare defence was well marshalled by team captain, Aisling Lambe at corner back and she had excellent support from Sile Boylan, Siobhán Tierney, Paula Keatley and Clodagh Flanagan. Paula and Clodagh switched to the attack in the second half with Kiri Lowry, Orla O’Shea and Deirdre Harris helping to totally eclipse the Dublin forwards while Therese Martin was always solid between the sticks. Joanna Timmins played well at midfield, as did Niamh Quinn off the bench. In attack Julie Cunningham and Deirdre Gately were the top performers while Cliona Dowling. Emma Coffey, Paula Keatley and Clodagh Flanagan, in the second half, also worked hard with little reward.
Dublin owe much to goalkeeper Deirdre Kelleher whose handling was always safe and she brought off one great save but was lucky the referee was lenient as she made a few sorties from goals to foul incoming forwards. Aine Deasy, Aisling King and Niamh Keane were the pick of the defence; Suzanne Murray won an amount of midfield possession in the first half while Teresa Mollohan was the only real dangerous forward although Aimee Molloy and Catherine Keaney did make some threatening runs.
